What we test for
Infections often occur without symptoms
Every day, over 1 million people worldwide contract STIs
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection of the mucous membranes caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It primarily leads to inflammation of the urethra, the genital tract, and the rectum.
Transmission through
If symptoms occur, they usually appear one to three weeks after infection: discharge from the urethra or vagina, itching, burning, and pain during urination. In women, the infection is often asymptomatic.
Chlamydia is transmitted during sexual contact through direct mucous membrane contact: vaginal, anal, or oral. It can also be passed from mother to child during childbirth.
Chlamydia can be effectively treated with antibiotics. It is important to complete the full course of treatment and ensure that sexual partners are treated as well to prevent reinfection.
If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, inflammation of the prostate, testicles, and epididymis, as well as infertility. In women, the infection can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes, preventing the egg from traveling properly.
Syphilis is a bacterial infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum. It progresses in several stages and, if left untreated, can affect the skin, mucous membranes, lymph nodes, as well as the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
Transmission through
Stage 1: painless sore (chancre) at the site of infection. Stage 2 (weeks later): skin rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Stage 3: severe damage to the heart, brain, and other organs.
Syphilis is transmitted through direct contact with a syphilis sore, most commonly during unprotected sexual contact (vaginal, anal, or oral). Transmission through contact with infected skin is also possible.
Syphilis can be effectively treated with antibiotics and is fully curable in its early stages. It is important to complete the full course of treatment and ensure that all sexual partners are treated as well.
If left untreated, syphilis can lead to severe damage to the cardiovascular and nervous systems. In the third stage, it may cause paralysis, dementia, and blindness (neurosyphilis).
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) specifically targets CD4 cells (T-helper cells) of the immune system and weakens it over time. If untreated, the infection can progress to AIDS, the stage at which the immune system is so compromised that life-threatening illnesses occur.
Transmission through
Shortly after infection: flu-like symptoms (fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes). After that: often no symptoms for years. In the AIDS stage: severe opportunistic infections and weight loss.
HIV is transmitted through infectious bodily fluids: blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. The main routes of transmission are unprotected sexual contact and sharing needles.
HIV is not curable, but it can be very well managed with antiretroviral therapy (ART). With consistent treatment, the viral load can drop below detectable levels, making transmission impossible (U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable).
Without treatment, HIV can progress to AIDS, leading to life-threatening infections and cancers. With early and consistent ART, people living with HIV can have a near-normal life expectancy.
Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It primarily affects the mucous membranes of the urethra, cervix, rectum, and throat.
Purulent (pus-like) discharge from the urethra or vagina, burning and pain during urination. With rectal infection: discharge and pain in the rectum. In women, the infection is often asymptomatic.
Gonorrhea is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact: vaginal, anal, and oral. It can also be passed from mother to newborn during childbirth (causing eye infection).
Treatment is with antibiotics. Due to increasing resistance, gonorrhea requires targeted therapy. Sexual partners must be treated as well.
If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and chronic pain. In men, it may cause inflammation of the epididymis (epididymitis).
Hepatitis C is a viral liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). It can be acute or chronic and may lead to long-term inflammation of the liver, cirrhosis, or liver cancer.
Often asymptomatic in the acute phase. If symptoms occur: fatigue, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), nausea, and discomfort in the upper abdomen. Chronic infections often go unnoticed for years.
Hepatitis C is primarily transmitted through blood contact, for example by sharing needles, unsterile tattoo equipment, or medical instruments. Sexual transmission is rare but can occur, especially during anal sex due to small mucosal injuries and unnoticed blood contact.
Hepatitis C can be cured in over 95% of cases with modern direct-acting antiviral medications (DAAs), usually within 8–12 weeks and with minimal side effects.
Chronic hepatitis C infection can lead to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis over time. In severe cases, it may result in hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer).

How to protect yourself effectively from STIs
- Communication: Open conversations about sexual health show responsibility. Talk about your last test, protection methods, and sexual health—this protects both partners and builds trust.
- Condoms & internal condoms: They provide very reliable protection against HIV and significantly reduce the risk of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis. However, they do not offer 100% protection, as some STIs like herpes or syphilis can also be transmitted through uncovered skin.
- Regular STI testing: Many STIs have no symptoms but are treatable—often completely—when detected early. If you have changing partners, testing every 3–6 months is recommended.
