That's what we test for
Infections often proceed without symptoms.
Every day, over 1 million people worldwide are infected with STIs.
Chlamydia are bacterial infections of the mucous membranes, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. They primarily lead to inflammation of the urethra, genital tract, and rectum.
Contagion via:
If symptoms appear, they show up one to three weeks after infection: discharge from the urethra or vagina, itching, burning, and pain during urination. In women, the infection is often asymptomatic.
The transmission occurs during sexual intercourse through direct mucous membrane contact: vaginal, anal, or oral. Chlamydia can also be transmitted from the mother to the newborn during birth.
Chlamydia can be effectively treated with antibiotics. It is important to complete the full course of medication and for sexual partners to also be treated to prevent reinfection.
If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, inflammation of the prostate, testicles, and epididymis, as well as infertility. In women, the infection can block the fallopian tubes, making it impossible for the egg to be transported.
Syphilis is a bacterial infectious disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It progresses in several stages and, if left untreated, can affect the skin, mucous membranes, lymph nodes, as well as the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
Contagion via:
Stage 1: painless ulcer (chancre) at the entry site. Stage 2 (weeks later): skin rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Stage 3: severe damage to the heart, brain, and other organs.
Syphilis is transmitted through direct contact with a syphilis sore, usually during unprotected sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal, or oral). Transmission through infected skin contact is also possible.
Syphilis can be treated effectively with antibiotics and is completely curable in early stages. Complete therapy and treatment of all sexual partners are important.
Left untreated, syphilis can lead to severe damage to the cardiovascular and nervous systems. In the third stage, paralysis, dementia, and blindness (neurosyphilis) are imminent.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) specifically targets and weakens CD4 cells (T-helper cells) of the immune system over time. If left untreated, the infection can progress to AIDS, the stage at which the immune system is so weakened that life-threatening illnesses occur.
Transmission via:
Shortly after infection: flu-like symptoms (fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes). Often no symptoms for many years thereafter. In the AIDS stage: severe opportunistic infections and weight loss.
HIV is transmitted through infectious bodily fluids: blood, semen, vaginal fluid, and breast milk. The main routes of transmission are unprotected sex and sharing needles.
HIV is not curable, but it is very well controllable with antiretroviral therapy (ART). With consistent ART, the viral load drops below the detection limit, meaning transmission is no longer possible (U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable).
Without treatment, HIV progresses to AIDS, accompanied by life-threatening infections and tumors. With early ART, a near-normal life expectancy is possible.
Gonorrhea (the clap) is a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It primarily affects the mucous membranes of the urethra, cervix, rectum, and throat. Transmission occurs via:
Purulent discharge from the urethra or vagina, burning and pain during urination. In cases of rectal infection: discharge and pain in the rectum. In women, the infection is often asymptomatic.
Gonorrhea is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact: vaginal, anal, and oral. Transmission from mother to newborn during birth (conjunctivitis) is also possible.
Treatment is with antibiotics. Due to increasing resistance, gonorrhea requires targeted therapy. Sexual partners must also be treated.
Untreated, gonorrhea can lead to inflammatory pelvic diseases, infertility, and chronic pain. In men, epididymitis is a risk.
Hepatitis C is a viral liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). It can be acute or chronic and can lead to long-term inflammation of liver tissue, liver cirrhosis, or liver cancer. Transmission via:
Often asymptomatic in the acute phase. If symptoms occur: fatigue, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), nausea, and a feeling of pressure in the upper abdomen. Chronic courses often remain unnoticed for years.
Hepatitis C is mainly transmitted through blood contact, e.g., through shared needles, unsterile tattoo needles, or medical instruments. Sexual transmission is rare but can occur, especially during anal sex, as this often leads to small mucosal injuries and thus unnoticed blood contact.
Hepatitis C can be cured in over 95% of cases with modern direct-acting antiviral medications (DAAs), usually within 8–12 weeks without significant side effects.
Over years, a chronic hepatitis C infection can lead to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. In the worst-case scenario, hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) develops.

How to protect yourself effectively against STIs
- Communication: Open communication about sexual health shows responsibility. Talk about your last test, protective measures, and sexual health – this protects both partners and builds trust.
- Condoms & Femidoms: They are highly reliable in protecting against HIV and significantly reduce the risk of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis. However, they do not offer 100% protection, as some STIs like herpes or syphilis can also be transmitted through uncovered skin areas.
- Regular STI Testing: Many STIs are asymptomatic but are treatable to fully curable with timely diagnosis. For people with multiple partners, testing every 3-6 months is recommended.
