What does that mean?

STI Risk Reduction with Medications
Toggle

Condoms are a good method, but not the preferred choice for everyone. For many, certain medications can offer an effective alternative or additional protection. Medications can greatly reduce the risk of contracting chlamydia, syphilis, and to a lesser extent, gonorrhea.

How does it work?
Toggle

If indicated, a specific antibiotic can be prescribed by a doctor that is taken once after sexual contact.

If used within a maximum of 72 hours after sex, it can significantly reduce the likelihood of contracting chlamydia and syphilis.

Who is Plan D for?
Toggle

According to clinical studies, it works for people (AMAB) who have condomless sex with men (AMAB).

Condomless sex means that no condom is used most of the time. This can be true for any type of sex—oral, anal, and vaginal, or front-hole sex.

What does the research say?
Toggle

Clinical studies show significant efficacy in reducing the transmission of some of the most common STIs:

1. Reduction in Chlamydia: 70-89%

2. Reduction in Syphilis: 73-87%

3. Reduction in Gonorrhea: 17-57%

Field data from clinics that already prescribe medicinal STI prevention confirm the efficacy shown in these studies (reduction in Chlamydia: 67-90%, reduction in Syphilis 56-78%).

Clinically proven effect

Clinical trials and field data demonstrate the high efficacy of pharmacological STI risk reduction. The incidence of bacterial STIs such as chlamydia and syphilis is demonstrably significantly reduced in individuals (gay and bisexual men, as well as trans*women) who use pharmacological STI prevention.¹

Frequently Asked Questions

Will [[[my insurance]]] cover the costs of the treatment?
Toggle

Statutory health insurance providers do not cover the costs of medical treatment or any medications. Insured persons currently have to bear these costs themselves. If you have private health insurance, you can coordinate with your private health insurance provider in advance and clarify cost coverage.

What happens if I'm [[[not eligible]]] for the program?
Toggle

Should a medical examination reveal that the program is medically unsuitable for you, we will, of course, refund the full amount paid within 10 business days. This applies only to Plan D.

Why is Every Health not allowed to mention [[[medicines]]]?
Toggle

Due to the provisions of the German Medicines Advertising Act, we are not allowed to mention the names of medicines or active ingredients on the website. Once the partner doctor has assessed your suitability for the program, you will be informed about the name of the medication, if relevant. Our medical expertise is available to you throughout the entire process to answer all your questions.

What about antibiotic resistance?
Toggle

Despite many years of use, no resistance to standard therapies has been observed for chlamydia and syphilis.

In contrast, gonorrhea is already highly resistant to antibiotics, which is why the antibiotic used for prophylaxis is not used for treatment. Other antibiotics are typically used in this case. Furthermore, there is currently no evidence that prophylaxis affects standard gonorrhea treatment, as it apparently does not increase resistance to other antibiotics (Chu VT et al., CROI 2024, #1154).

With other bacteria, the development of resistance is rather low with moderate use (Chu VT et al.; CROI 2024; #1154) and even with daily use is limited and only temporary (Truong R et al. 2022; doi:10.1093/jacamr/dlac009.).

In summary: Antibiotic resistance is a serious issue and should be monitored. However, when taken responsibly and under medical supervision as post-exposure prophylaxis, major side effects are unlikely. This approach has proven highly effective in significantly reducing the risk of STIs in high-risk groups who engage in condomless sex.
